What is organic coffee?

At GESHA Coffee Co, we proudly offer a NASAA Certified Organic blend, a sustainable choice for those seeking an exceptional cup of coffee with peace of mind.

What does “Certified Organic” mean?

By definition, organic coffee is grown without synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It is produced using methods that prioritise soil health, natural pest control, and biodiversity.

In Australia, achieving organic certification is a rigorous process. The National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce ensures that products labelled as “Certified Organic” meet strict criteria. Independent certifiers, like The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA), verify compliance, guaranteeing that every bean is farmed, processed, and handled with integrity.

Unfortunately, the term “organic” isn’t regulated in Australia, meaning anyone can label a product as “organic” without proof. However, when you see the “Certified Organic” label alongside a certifier like NASAA, you can trust that it meets the highest standards.

At GESHA Coffee Co, we continue to work hard to meet the strict standards for organic certification. It requires maintaining detailed records, ensuring full traceability, and completing regular inspections such as audits to uphold the integrity of our organic certified label.

Does organic mean better-tasting coffee?

Not necessarily. Organic certification ensures that coffee is grown with strict environmental and sustainability standards, but it doesn’t automatically mean it will taste better. Taste is subjective, so what’s “better” depends on personal preference. Factors like altitude, soil composition, and climate all shape the flavour, and organic coffee is often shade-grown, which can result in a less acidic, smoother cup. But ultimately, the real magic happens in the roasting process. A high-quality organic coffee still requires expert roasting to bring out its best characteristics — balance and complexity. We take great care to roast our organic beans with the same precision and attention to detail as the rest of our range.  Not all organic coffee will taste the same, and not all will meet specialty-grade expectations. That’s why we carefully select and roast our Certified Organic beans to ensure they deliver a consistently delicious cup.

What about non-organic coffee?

While we’re incredibly proud of our organic blend, it’s important to note that all our coffee—organic or not—is crafted with the same dedication to quality. All of our blends and single origin roasts, including organic and decaf, are sourced from trusted farms around the world and roasted with care to highlight the unique characteristics of each bean.

Whether you choose our organic blend or one of our other blends or single origin roasts, you can count on the same exceptional flavour, high ethical standards and consistency.

What to expect from our organic coffee

Our NASAA Certified Organic blend is carefully sourced and roasted to ensure it delivers a consistently delicious cup. This blend offers smooth chocolate and nutty flavours, complemented by a delicate fruity aroma. With low acidity and a medium body, it’s well-balanced and versatile.

Enjoy it black to bring out hints of raisin and nuts, or add milk for a creamy texture with notes of milk chocolate. Whether you brew it as an espresso, stovetop, plunger, filter, or cold brew, this organic blend is crafted to bring out the best in every cup.

If organic coffee is important to you, it’s always worth doing your research. A certification label alone doesn’t guarantee quality or great taste. Not all organic coffees meet specialty-grade standards, so asking the right questions such as where and how the beans are grown, and how they’re roasted—can make all the difference.
