Blend vs Single Origin Coffee
Whether you’re new to specialty coffee or looking to expand your coffee knowledge, understanding the difference between blends and single origins is a great place to start.
While both can produce an exceptional cup, they’re crafted with different goals in mind and each offers a unique drinking experience.
In this guide, we’ll explore what sets them apart, how to get the best from each coffee, and help you discover which one is right for you.
What is a blend?
A blend is crafted by combining beans from multiple origins to create one carefully crafted flavour profile.
At GESHA Coffee Co., our blends are thoughtfully developed using coffees sourced from a range of origins before being roasted in-house. By combining complementary beans from different regions, we’re able to create flavour profiles that are uniquely ours; balanced, layered and consistent.
One of the greatest advantages of a blend is its consistency. By thoughtfully adjusting the combination of origins as harvests change throughout the year, we’re able to maintain the same flavour profile you know and love, delivering a familiar cup every time you brew.
Whether you enjoy rich chocolate notes, bright acidity or something beautifully balanced, our range of blends offers a coffee to suit every taste and brewing style.
What is single origin?
A single origin tells the story of one place.
Rather than combining coffees from different regions, single origin coffees come from one specific farm, producer or growing region, allowing the unique characteristics of that origin to shine through.
Every growing region has its own climate, altitude, soil and processing methods, all of which influence the flavour in the cup. From bright citrus and juicy berries to rich chocolate or delicate florals, every origin offers something different, making single origins an exciting choice for those who enjoy exploring coffee.
Unlike blends, our single origin offering changes throughout the year as new harvests arrive from around the world. Each coffee reflects the unique conditions of its growing season, meaning there’s always something new to discover. It’s this individuality, traceability and seasonality that make single origin coffees so special.
One of the things that makes single origin coffees so special is their diversity. No two origins taste exactly the same, giving you the opportunity to experience a wide range of flavour profiles throughout the year.
Choosing the right brew method
The best brewing method comes down to personal preference, and the good news is that both blends and single origins can be enjoyed however you like.
If you’re brewing espresso or making milk-based coffees like flat whites and lattes, our blends are designed to deliver a rich, balanced flavour that shines through the milk while remaining smooth enough to enjoy black.
If you’ve chosen single origin, we encourage you to try it as a filter coffee using a V60 pour over or AeroPress method. These methods produce a cleaner, lighter-bodied cup that allows the coffee’s unique flavour notes, natural sweetness and aromas to really shine.
Of course, there are no rules. Many of our customers love brewing single origins as espresso or enjoying blends as filter coffee. The best coffee is simply the one you enjoy drinking.
Looking for something even more exclusive?
For coffee lovers who enjoy discovering something a little different and more exclusive, our Micro Batch range offers an even deeper dive into the world of specialty coffee.
Every so often, we come across beans that are simply too exceptional not to share. Carefully sourced in limited quantities and roasted in-house, each Micro Batch highlights rare origins, remarkable flavour profiles and the unique story behind every bean.
Available in limited edition drops throughout the year, our Micro Batch range is designed for those who love exploring rare coffees and experiencing flavours you won’t find every day.
So, which should you choose?
The beauty of coffee is that you don’t have to choose just one.
If you enjoy a coffee that’s balanced and thoughtfully crafted, our blends are a wonderful everyday companion. If you’re curious to explore how origin influences flavour, our single origins offer a change to experience coffee in a whole new way.
Whichever you choose, every coffee at GESHA Coffee Co. is thoughtfully sourced, expertly roasted in-house and crafted with one goal in mind: to make your everyday ritual more luxurious.
