How we make decaf coffee
We believe quality coffee should be accessible to everyone, whether you’re chasing the buzz or simply enjoying the flavour. That’s why we’re proud to offer a delicious decaf that delivers the full coffee experience, just minus the caffeine.
How is coffee decaffeinated?
All decaf coffee starts out the same as regular coffee; grown, harvested, and processed as green (unroasted) beans. The decaffeination process happens before the coffee reaches our roastery, and there are several methods used around the world to remove caffeine. Some common decaffeination methods include:
-
Solvent-based methods (using chemicals like methylene chloride or ethyl acetate)
-
CO₂ method (using pressurised carbon dioxide to extract caffeine)
-
Swiss Water® Process (our method of choice—chemical-free and trusted for quality)
Why we choose the Swiss Water® Process
While all approved methods are considered safe, we choose the Swiss Water Process because it uses only fresh water, temperature, and time to gently remove caffeine. There are no chemicals involved, and the integrity of the bean (and its flavour) is preserved. The Swiss Water Process is a 100% chemical-free decaffeination method developed in Switzerland in the 1930s. It relies on a proprietary filtration system to remove caffeine while retaining the origin character and complexity of the beans. This method is not only clean and sustainable, it also consistently delivers better-tasting decaf.
The process works by creating a saturated water solution called Green Coffee Extract (GCE), which draws out the caffeine while keeping the flavour compounds intact. It’s trusted globally for preserving the unique characteristics of each origin.
Once the raw beans are decaffeinated, they’re shipped to us as green, ready-to-roast coffee. We then roast with the same attention to detail and care we bring to our entire range, ensuring every batch is full of depth, balance, and flavour.
The result? A coffee that tastes like “coffee”. Rich, nuanced, and satisfying.
How has decaf coffee evolved over the years?
The decaf market has grown significantly in recent years, both in terms of quality and demand. With more roasters and importers prioritising quality decaffeination methods and sourcing specialty-grade beans specifically for decaf, there’s never been a better time to be a decaf drinker. We’ve seen a growing number of customers choosing decaf, not because they have to, but because they want to. Whether it’s to cut back on caffeine for health, pregnancy, sleep, or just personal preference, more people are realising they can still enjoy that morning ritual or afternoon pick-me-up without compromise.
What to expect from our decaf
Our Decaf coffee is a carefully developed medium-dark roast that proves you don’t need caffeine to enjoy a great cup. With low acidity, a smooth medium-full body, and a pleasant nutty aroma, it offers rich notes of nutmeg and brown sugar, finishing clean with a lingering sweetness. It’s everything you love about specialty coffee, just without the caffeine.
